Alcohol Treatment Should Match The Individual Patient

Alcohol treatment doesn’t always mean detoxification procedures at an inpatient alcohol treatment center. Treating binge drinkers or a new excessive drinker, especially ones with recent life happenings that may have started the drinking, are more in need of psychological counseling and an outpatient relationship with a good program. They most certainly don’t need detox or any radical medical supervision. They are not usually considered to be alcoholic but rather problem drinkers that can be easily helped through counseling and family guidance.

The other side of the alcohol treatment scene is treating the true addict who has been drinking steadily for months even years, slowly deteriorating first socially, then mentally and finally physically. Far too many addicts of the alcoholic type go through their dilemma unnoticed for years until their problem becomes life threatening. While many come through this intact after inpatient alcohol treatment, a good many don’t.

Whether psychological problems brought on the addiction or the addiction caused the psychological problems matters little now for an addicted alcoholic. This type of dual diagnosis alcohol treatment needs to be performed in a full service medical facility. Not all inpatient alcohol treatment centers have both the medical and psychological staff in-house and many times will be affiliated with a qualified mental health provider nearby. Most inpatient mental health needs can be accommodated fully by this type of as needed arrangement.
